Doumen

As part of Zhuhai City, Doumen once belonged to Zhongshan City and became an independent county in 1965. And in 2001, it returned back to a district position, at county level anyway. With a population of 100 000 and being a hometown of thousands of oversees Chinese, Doumen District lies along the western side of the mouth of the Pearl. Being in the estuary area of the Pearl, Doumen is a water country crisscrossed with innumerous rivers and streams, characterized with rice paddies and sugarcane fields. The crisscrossed waterways are important for irrigation, shipping as well as recreational pursuits. With a rich rainfall of 2 231mm annually and plenty of sunshine, its sugarcane production has remained No.1 of Guangdong Province with best quality and highest yield. And for this, Doumen is nicknamed the Sweet County of Guangdong. Doumen is also known for seafood, especially sand shrimps, river and sea crabs, river and sea eels, oysters and perches. Fruit is plentiful, such as litchis, tangerines, oranges, kudzu starch, lotus seeds and roots.
