Edmonton is the capital of Alberta, a Canadian province. It is the northernmost city with a population over 500,000 in North America. It is situated in the central region of the province, in an area with some of the most fertile farmland on the prairies. It is the second largest city in Alberta, with a population of 712,391 (2005).
