LakshadweepLakshadweep is the smallest union territory of India. Located in the Arabian Sea, it consists of twelve coral atolls, three coral reefs, five banks, and numerous islets that lie 200–300 km off of the coast of Kerala. The total land area of the territory is 32 km². Eleven of the islands are inhabited. Lakshadweep is the northern part of the erstwhile Lakshadweepa. Due to its isolation and scenic appeal, Lakshadweep is emerging as a major tourist attraction for Indians. This brings in significant revenue, which is likely to increase. Since such a small region cannot support industries, the government is actively promoting tourism as a means of income. Lakshadweep is under the jurisdiction of the High Court of Kerala at Ernakulam. Lakshadweep is not as renowned a destination as Goa or Kerala, but its lagoons and beaches are just as beautiful. The wealth of coral formations attracts a variety of tropical fish – angel, clown, butterfly, sturgeon, sweetlip, snappers and groupers. Kavaratti, which is the administrative capital of Lakshadweep, is located in the centre of the archipelago. Its two most significant mosques are the Ajjara and Jamath Mosques, which are characterised by exquisite woodcarvings. The former in particular has a beautiful ceiling carved out of driftwood, which is the handiwork of local craftsmen. The Aquarium at Kavaratti with tropical fish and corals, the Kavaratti Lake, and the splendid tombs it houses, are the other attractions of the place.
